The Truman Show originated from a screenplay by Niccol inspired by an episode of The Twilight Zone titled “Special Service.”[4] Unlike the finished film, it was a science fiction thriller set in New York City. Scott Rudin bought the script to produce it with Paramount Pictures as distributor. The film was to be directed by Brian De Palma, but Weir was finally hired as director; making the film for sixty million dollars, twenty million less than originally estimated. Niccol rewrote the script while the production waited for Carrey to join the project. Most of the filming took place in Seaside, a planned community located in the Florida panhandle.
The film was a box office success, received critical acclaim from film critics and was nominated for Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Saturn awards. The Truman Show has been studied as a thesis in Christianity, metaphilosophy, simulated reality, surveillance, existentialism and reality television.

The Truman Show is an American film directed by Peter Weir and starring Jim Carrey and Ed Harris. Released in 1998, the film earned three Oscar nominations for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Best Original Screenplay.
The film starts from day 10,909 of Truman’s life (and thus of the program). It begins in the style of a television show, with opening credits and interviews with the three main characters: Christof (the show’s creator), Meryl (the wife) and Marlon (the best friend). Throughout the film, scenes of Truman are intercut with scenes of people on the outside watching “The Truman Channel.” The film shows many of Truman’s needs for security – his job as an insurance agent, his fear of water and sailing – set against his enormous desire to explore the world, to travel, to simply leave Seaheaven behind. In one of the attempts to keep Truman from deciding to leave the island on which he lives, he encounters the prepared death of his father at the hands of a storm on the high seas, a menacing dog in his path as he attempts to explore the island, and other explicit ways to discourage him in his desires.
