What may seem like a very attractive tool for users of the social network, can become a great nuisance from the point of view of privacy. If you post that you are in a certain restaurant, for example, the search engine will have this information and it will be displayed in the results when any of your contacts search for that option. If contacts and friends have marked the content as private or accessible only to a small group of people, only they will have this information available.

“We’re a company that creates technology to connect,” said Zuckerberg. “Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a vastly larger creator economy.”

“It’s a virtual environment. We can be present with people in digital spaces. And you can think of this as an embedded Internet where you’re inside rather than just watching. And we think this will be the successor to the mobile Internet,” Zuckerberg said.

He added: “Inside the metaverse, you can create a meeting, play with friends, work, create and more. Basically, today you’ll be able to do everything you can do on the Internet, as well as some things that don’t make sense on the Internet like dancing. Creation, avatars and digital objects will be central to the way we express ourselves and this will lead to entirely new experiences and economic opportunities.”

Something undeniable nowadays is that technology is surpassing the limits of what we thought unimaginable, and technological advances are occurring at an impressive speed, so much so that now artificial intelligence, virtual reality and robots are beginning to be part of our daily lives.

It is as if the internet is starting to come to life, an infinite world of intercepted virtual communities where people will be able to meet, work and even play with virtual reality devices through the use of augmented reality glasses, smartphone applications and other devices.

But, what is the Metaverse? The easiest way to understand it is as an almost total virtual world, from which we can interact with the real world and also do things that we cannot do physically. This idea has already been explored in science fiction novels such as Ready Player One, in which people not only live physically, but much of the economy and life experience revolves around the OASIS, a video game in which you can do virtually everything you can imagine.

Proposals like this already exist in the world, Fortnite being one of the best known, because beyond being a game, there users attend concerts, launches, events and are part of an entire immersive and interactive experience. Although less known, Roblox also follows this business model, in which entering Roblox is not entering a video game, but a new world where you can access more services.

With the name change, Meta aims to become a worldwide service, a virtual second life that will even allow us to trade cryptocurrencies or NFTs. “We expect that within the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, enable hundreds of billions of dollars in digital commerce, and provide jobs for millions of creators and developers,” Mark Zuckerberg concludes in his letter.
