The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, better known as NASA, is the U.S. government agency responsible for the civil space program, as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.
The science NASA employs focuses on better understanding the Earth through the Earth Observing System (EOS),[8] advancing heliophysics through the efforts of the Science Mission Directorate’s Heliophysics Research Program,[9] exploring bodies throughout the solar system with advanced robotic missions such as New Horizons[10] and investigating astrophysics questions such as the Big Bang through the Great Observatories and associated programs. [11] NASA shares information with a variety of national and international organizations, as in the case of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Ibuki satellite.

The Apollo Program achieved its goal with Apollo 11, which landed on the surface of the Moon on July 20, 1969, manned by Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin, and returned them to Earth on July 24.
As part of the larger Mars Exploration Program, Mars Global Surveyor performed monitoring relays for sister orbiters during aerodynamic braking, and assisted Mars rovers and Mars landing missions by identifying potential landing sites and transmitting surface telemetry.
